Requests


Fabricated Equipment means a new piece of equipment fabricated by a department, lab or center for use in the performance of its research contract or grant usually within the confines of MIT facilities. A fabricated item will be capitalized if the cost of the material making up the fabrication is $3,000 or greater, the useful life of the item is more than one year, the item is MIT-owned or government funded and the item is identifiable as a discrete item.

Requests for the establishment of Fabricated Equipment Cost Objects should be emailed or addressed to Ryan T. McAlarney, Property Auditor, Property Office, NE49-4021.

The following information is required to request fabricated equipment:

  1. A description and diagram of the fabricated item to be constructed;
  2. Parent WBS cost object;
  3. Total budget estimate of allowable costs including description, quantity, unit cost and vendor (if known).
  4. Estimated completion date.
  5. Estimated useful life of the fabrication when complete:
  6. Location of the equipment during fabrication, the location of the completed fabrication and the name of the responsible person;

The following G/L Accounts are allowable for fabricated equipment cost estimates to be included in the final fabricated item:

  • 421818 Capital Equipment (only allowed if it's an internal component or an integral part of the fabrication);
  • 420226 Materials and Services;
  • 420160 Cost of Electrical Components;
  • 420232 Mechanical Components;
  • 420310 Raw Materials;
  • 420600 Subcontractor's Cost;

If the request is not complete, it will be returned to the originator for additional information.
